Aromatherapy for Hayfever

How wonderful it is to feel ourselves begin to relax as the warmer weather arrives. Being outside, stretching and awakening ourselves to the spring energy it is a delight, but for those who suffer with hay fever it is also a time that the allergic response to certain pollen's begins!

The symptoms of hay fever are probably too well known to need description; runny noses, sneezing, and streaming eyes, when the particular group of pollen's to which the individual person reacts are floating in the air.

The art – and science of using plant oils in treatment today is referred to as aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy has its roots deeply intertwined in the most ancient healing practices of mankind and yet is still relevant to us today. Essential oils are a helpful and approachable treatment for the whole family. They can be used in a number of different ways including baths, massage (chest and back), vaporisers or my personal favourite the personal inhaler!

Over the years my relationship with essential oils has deepened and I now see them as old friends, just like my oldest friends I love them for their different personalities and abilities!

There are many that can be useful with allergies, some are the same oils that I would go to for a common cold such as Lavender and Eucalyptus. I always consider the symptoms that are being experienced with the hay fever and then tweak the blends accordingly for instance oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, spike lavender, ravintsara and myrtle can be useful for sneezing and runny noses. German chamomile is helpful because of its anti-allergenic properties. Niaouli has excellent immuno-stimulant and restorative properties. It all depends.

But my preference is often Chamomile, particularly German Chamomile.

German Chamomile – Anthemis Nobilis the oil that was revered by the Egyptians for its ability to lower fevers and for calming heat. It has natural anti allergenic abilities, and aids with any type of inflammation. Including chamomile tea! Which is so easily added into our daily diet and is delicious.
